A word of advice to anyone who is ever involved in a car accident: Do not flee from the scene of the crime.

It's suspected that linebacker Brandon Spikes found himself in such a situation early Sunday morning after a beat-up 2011 Mercedes Maybach registered to the former Patriots and Bills linebacker was found in the middle of a highway median sometime before 3:30 a.m. According to OnStar, the driver of the vehicle had claimed to have struck a deer; however, police were unable to find the animal anywhere in the vicinity of the car. So, naturally, Spikes—who is, naturally, suspected to have been driving the car—fled from the scene, leaving behind a car that is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Er, shall we say was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. A photo of the car snapped by Boston.com shows that the value of the vehicle may have dropped just a tad after this little fender-bender.

So, if there was no deer in the area, then how exactly did Spikes' car incur so much damage? Well, after the police found the car on the median, they visited the scene of a nearby hit-and-run which had sent three people to the hospital with minor injuries. At some point in the night, they had been rear-ended (note that the front of Spikes' car suffered the most damage). And, unfortunately, the offending vehicle took off before anyone could know what was what.

All the signs (no deer, corresponding damage reports, Spikes' conspicuous absence from the scene) point toward a hit-and-run from Spikes. However, because they still need to confirm the timeline between these two incidents, the police have yet to formally press charges against him. On the other hand, Spikes' former employer, the New England Patriots, took no chances when they heard the news this morning. Spikes was drafted by the Patriots in 2010, played the 2014 season in Buffalo, and then re-signed with New England this offseason. His return was, unfortunately, short-lived.

Post-Aaron Hernandez, the Patriots are clearly not messing around when it comes to their public image. The police are still merely investigating a connection between Spikes and the hit-and-run, but the Patriots have decided that they won't have their name attached to any part of the process.

UPDATE: Another shot of Spikes' car.
