Auburn freshman football player Jakell Mitchell—who redshirted this season—was killed last night in a shooting at an apartment complex near the Auburn campus. He was just 18 years old.

Little is known about what happened at this time. Police said that they responded at 12:25 A.M. to a report of shots fired at the Tiger Lodge apartments, and upon arriving they discovered Mitchell’s body. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Mitchell had redshirted this year, but was expected to contend for a starting job at H-back and tight end next season. Police have said that the investigation is ongoing, but there are no suspects in custody at this time.

UPDATE: According to Auburn's News Leader 9, an arrest has already been made in the case. They report that 22-year-old Markale Hart, of Camp Hill, has been booked and charged with murder. He is currently being held on $150,000 bond.
