Deron Williams has spent the last two seasons of his NBA career playing for the Nets in Brooklyn. So you would think that, by now, he'd be pretty used to living in New York City. But during a recent interview with a magazine called Resident, Williams revealed that he has not taken to NYC like most people who move there. Not at all actually. And from the sound of things, he doesn't seem to enjoy residing in the Big Apple.
"I'm not going to lie," he said. "I don't really feel so much like a New Yorker. I grew up in an apartment in Texas where you could send your kids outside like, 'Yeah, go play in the sun.' Here, it's more challenging. The process of getting them into school is a nightmare. Even private schools where you pay are an ordeal."
Williams misses how easy he had it when he played for the Jazz in Utah.
"In Utah, you just send your kids to the first public school in the area because they're all great," he said. "Truth is, we enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle and going back to Utah every summer. It's a relief to take that timeout. No traffic. No crowds. My daughters still have their friends there. There's a big backyard. They go to the pool, the playground, and they jump on the trampoline. Kids running wild and free here in New York…? I don't think so."
Does all of this mean that Williams isn't happy with the Nets right now? Not necessarily. But Williams' career in Brooklyn has been anything but a success so far and it feels like it might be wearing on him a little bit. So it'll be interesting to see how the next couple of years go both for him and the Nets. Because the jury is still out on whether or not his decision to sign with the Nets was a good one.
