In a city that’s often accused of being superficial, can basketball really be authentic? Big Boy certainly seems to think so.

“Basketball in LA is way more authentic,” he says. “We really are ‘go hard or go home’ out here. …And it’s not just because we bring the stars out better than anywhere else in the country.”

The man does have a point. After all, this is the town of the Lakers, who have won 16 NBA Championships. That’s right: 16. It’s also the home of the Clippers, a franchise that boasts two of the greatest young talents in the league, and which many believe is on the cusp of embarking on its own dynasty run.

But Big Boy doesn’t think all of LA basketball revolves around the Staples Center. In fact, its true heart lies about 15 miles west, right along the ocean: the courts at Venice Beach. “Venice Beach is really ‘play or get the hell out of here,’” he says. “Some of the hardest ‘go hard or go home’ courts that really put you to the test.”

For Big Boy, authenticity is everything, and not just when it comes to basketball. In the video above, he talks about some of his favorite authentic Los Angeles locales, from the “often imitated, never duplicated” Holy Grail sneaker shop to his favorite ink spot, the Tattoo Lounge. Be sure to give it a watch to hear more of his thoughts on what makes the City of Angels like no other.
