When we drove the BMW X1 we were pleasantly surprised, and ferried quickly away from a shady looking, one eyed hobo who appeared to be armed and was rapidly approaching the dude with the expensive car. Thanks 3.0L turbo I6 and AWD!
Of course, we would have liked it a bit more if it had been a proper hatchback, rather than a CUV, but we'll take what we can get. For the next generation, it looks like "what we can get" could very well by an X1 M that would compete with the Benz GLA 45 AMG and the Audi RS Q3.
We'd wager that such a car would borrow heavily from the M235i and the upcoming M2.
