This is not the 718. It’s a 2014 Porsche Boxster and it retails starting at around $50,000. But if new reports from Auto Bild are correct, Stuttgart could be launching a back-to-basics sports car for even less, reminiscent of the iconic Porsche 550.

Tentatively called the 718, Porsche has reportedly earmarked the new car to slot underneath the Boxster and Cayman for 2016, pushing both models a bit further upmarket. And in ambitious Porsche fashion, the firm hopes to keep the curb weight below 2620 pounds – or just 100 pounds shy of the current Mazda MX-5.

Engines? Expect Porsche’s new 2.0L and 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engines fixed underneath the 718, good for around 280-horsepower up to 350hp with the bigger mill. Pricing isn't clear, but anything less than $50,000 is an improvement.
