It isn’t everyday that a 50-year-old car gets put back into production, but Jaguar isn’t just any automaker. The firm will build six brand new Lightweight E-Types, the first of which will go on sale later this summer.

In 1963, Jaguar arranged for 18 featherweight E-Types to be produced, however only the first 12 chassis were used and the last six cars never came to fruition. Over half a century later, the current engineers at Jaguar are beginning to hand build the iconic grand tourers to their original specifications, including the 3.8L straight-six.

The original lightweight cars carried about 250 lbs less weight than the standard E-Type, due to their all-aluminum body and engine block, a bare-bones interior, and lack of exterior chrome elements.

Getting your hands on one won’t be easy though. The six throwback E-Types are reported to sell to the most qualified customers – someone call Jay Leno.
