Right now the U.S. Air Force only awards launch contracts to a single company, United Launch Alliance, without competition. Elon Musk thinks that's bullshit and has announced that SpaceX will file a lawsuit against the Federal Government to end the "monopoly."

The lawsuit comes at the heels of the government awarding a $7.2 billion contract to ULA to use rocket boosters to launch things like GPS satellites into. Musk says the contract "essentially blocks companies like SpaceX from competing for national security launches."

A ULA spokesperson has said the company has saved the government $4 billion, but Musk thinks he can do even better. "The ULA rockets are basically four times more expensive than ours," the SpaceX founder and CEO said. "So this contract is costing U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars for no reason."

This is a huge battle, but if it pays off, SpaceX could become an even bigger player in the aerospace game.
