Back in March 1962, at the Hershey Sports Arena in Hershey, Penn., Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a game against the New York Knicks. We know this because the game has been well documented. There's even a photo of Chamberlain holding up a piece of paper with the number "100" on it shortly after the game ended. But unfortunately, most people haven't actually seen the game because video of it does not exist. Or does it?
According to Memphis Tigers head coach Josh Pastner, a video of Chamberlain's 100-point game does exist. He says that his dad—who once served as a ball boy for Philadelphia—and his grandfather taped the game. His dad just can't find it. Pastner talked about it during an interview with The 700 Level over the weekend.
"My father and his father taped the game reel-to-reel in the second quarter when it was in Hershey, Pennsylvania in the 100-point game," he said. "They started when he had like 30-something; they thought it was going to be a special night. They gave it to Wilt—the 100-point game—and Wilt gave it back to my dad and my dad's dad. He gave it back to them, they boxed it up, and he's still trying to find it. He's got all kinds of boxes, and he doesn't know if he lost it. He's trying to find the sucker."
Can you imagine if he does find the tape of that game? Obviously, it won't show Chamberlain scoring all 100 points. But the tape will show how Chamberlain was able to dominate the Knicks on that particular day to set one of the greatest records in sports history. We can only hope that Pastner's dad gets around to finding the tape one day.
