Weirder than the fact that Porsche is probably bringing a 911 4x4 called "Safari" to the Beijing Auto Show is the fact that there is a precedent for this. In 1978 Porsche made the 911 SC Safari for the East African Safari Rally, in 1983 three 911 Carrera 4x4s were entered in the Dakar Rally, and in 1985 the company tackled the Dakar in a car simply called 959.

The modern 911 Safari would come equipped with chunkier tires, off-road suspension, and skid plates. While it would primarily be targeted at markets like China and Russia which are riddled with bumpy roads, it would probably go on sale world wide in 2016. This is the same year the 911 is expected to have its mid-cycle refresh.
