Is the Cadillac ELR Too Expensive?

GM set the price for the new plug-in hybrid ELR, but will people pay it?

Back in 2011, GM was saying the the Chevy Volt-based Cadillac ELR was going to cost less than a Tesla Model S. At that price range, we could see a few people stepping up and buying a laurel-bearing Volt. However, GM just announced the actual price for the ELR, and it's going to cost $75,000 and a $995 destination charge.

Yes, it looks cool, and yes the technology is impressive, but is it really worth $40,000 more than the Volt that it's mechanically identical to? For this much money you could cop a Tesla Model S and a cheap gas powered car for long trips.
