Motor Trend, in recent years, has started making its money by pitting cars with rabid fanbases against each other and providing, more often than not, a shocking result. The long running mag's latest duel: the SRT Viper vs. the Corvette ZR1. MT brought in pro driver Randy Pobst to test the cars and he set record lap times at Laguna Seca in both. In the Corvette he managed to get around the circuit in 1:33.70 and in the Viper he took 1:35.77.

Even though the Viper's posted time is still better than that of the Ferrari 458 Italia, Nissan GT-R, and Lexus LFA, SRT boss and Trump-smacking hero Ralph Gilles took to Twitter to defend his creation and promise that SRT will be sending a pro out there to set a new lap record in the Viper.

@stewart_cody @mt_loverman @motortrend There is a lot more left in the car, Randy has always struggled with the Viper.
@columwood @jalopnik @mt_loverman @stewart_cody We had a ZR1 around for 2yrs. A great car, Our car simply rewards that "bravery" MT mentions
@rynomite21 @mt_loverman we've tested both cars at several tracks and never seen a gap like that. Many drivers needlessly fear the Viper
@haroldsmith3rd we'll send our pro out to Laguna and see what he can do...
