For the last 80 years, Augusta National Golf Club has turned females away when they've tried to become members at the prominent golf course. Even under heavy, heavy scrutiny from, well, everyone, they've stood their ground and remained an all-male golf club (sounds like an awesome club to be a part of, right? NOT!). But, earlier today, history was made when the golf course that hosts The Masters every year finally extended a membership to two women—former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore. Both of them said yes to the offer.
"This is a joyous occasion," Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said in a statement. "These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership. It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. This is a significant and positive time in our club's history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family."
And, we want to take this opportunity to say…Finally. It took you guys long enough, but you finally got it right.
