We like Brandon Roy. We appreciate his game. We admire the way he carries himself both on and off the court. And unlike a lot of the NBA's other stars (ahem—LEBRON!—ahem), we look up to the way he has closed out ballgames for the Trail Blazers over the course of the last few seasons. However, it appears he's closed out his last one for them, and it's a damn shame.
According to an anonymous league executive, Roy will reportedly be cut by the Blazers before the start of the NBA season because of his balky knees. Blazers owner Paul Allen will use the amnesty clause that came out of the new NBA collective bargaining agreement to cut Roy—and the five-year, $82 million contract extension he signed back in 2009 (though, for the record, don't cry too hard for B-Roy, 'cause he will still get all his money!).
"Brandon's out," the league executive said. "Don't know the exact details, but everyone around the league knows it's way, way done."
Ouch, Brandon. And we aren't talking about your knees. Here's to hoping that someone out there—you listening, Mark Cuban?—is willing to take a chance on you this season. Because we don't want to see you go out like this.
