Prom season is coming up and the extravagant videos of people getting asked on dates are going to show up soon. The over-the-top videos of teens asking their crushes or celebrities to prom are entertaining, but after a while they run their course. One thing we haven’t seen yet is it backfiring in someone’s face, until now.

In a Reddit post, a young teen asked a girl out by offering his prospective date a pair of adidas Yeezy Boost 350s —a nice and expensive gift for the girl of his dreams. The only problem is that he didn’t do a legit check on the sneakers first.

The happy, young girl took to Twitter to show off the gift and then the heartbreak set in: Someone replied to her pictures with proof that the Yeezy were, indeed, fake.

You can say it's the thought that counts, but you've got to make sure the shoes are legit before you offer them as a token of your affection. Hopefully dude still has his prom date in order.

We've reached out to the couple but have not received a comment at time of publishing.
