Many sneakerheads, even some of the more knowledgeable ones, often get the story of Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny mixed up. They think the partnership started with Space Jam, a defining basketball flick that became an unforgettable part of many childhood dreams.

That’s not true, however.

Warner Bros. and Nike planted the seeds for that eventual movie a few years earlier. After using Spike Lee and his Mars Blackmon alter ego to turn MJ into the coolest basketball player to ever walk the planet during the late ’80s and early ’90s, Nike wanted to change things up. In 1992, they went in a completely different direction for the marketing campaign of the Air Jordan VII. During the first commercial that aired around Super Bowl Sunday, they had Mike and Bugs shut down a pickup run at a local gymnasium. Bugs got his own colorway of the VII, the classic “Hare” edition, while Jordan went to work in the equally impressive “Bordeaux” version.

The sneaker was different, too, pulling from West African tribal art and music while doing away with design aspects like the “Nike Air” logo and the visible Air unit. It also featured a Huarache neoprene inner bootie.

As for actually playing NBA games in them, Jordan steered clear of the Bordeaux. It was basically a “lifestyle” release before there were official “lifestyle” releases. He did, however, wear them during the 1992 NBA All-Star Game. Everything that night was overshadowed by Magic Johnson’s incredible post-retirement, post-HIV announcement performance, but Mike still led the East in scoring and minutes. The Bordeaux’s legacy was complete.

Sneakerheads everywhere absolutely adore this sneaker. Part of that is the style. It’s a unique sneaker with a slick mash-up of dark colors (black, light graphite, Bordeaux). But another component is the mystery behind the silhouette. Jordan wore a number of VII colorways in the NBA, but not this one. Before 2011, we had seen a number of retro Jordan VIIs, as well, but not this one. That made the Bordeaux special.
