It turns out Nike has more innovation than just the Kobe 9 in store for the early part of next year.

As reported by Taiwan-based tech site DigiTimes, word around the rumor mill is that Nike is also expected to roll out a brand new smartwatch in 2014—this after adidas released its first smartwatch in the miCoach Smart Run in Fall 2013. While the news hasn’t yet been confirmed by Nike (and likely won’t be until it deems ready), it would make sense for the brand to expand on its performance tracking device offerings.

Though Nike has had profound success with the Nike+ FuelBand and more recent FuelBand SE products, the two don’t quite stack up to more advanced devices such as the aforementioned adidas SmartRun and the upcoming Galaxy Gear—which offer greater functionality and are compatible with the three popular smartphone operating systems: Android 4.1.1, Windows Phone 8 and iOS.
