'Wonder Woman' Might Become the First Comic Book Film to Be Nominated for a Best Picture Oscar

Warner Bros. is reportedly getting ready to begin an expensive campaign to get the film nominated.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the highly successful comic book adaptation Wonder Womanseems to be gearing up to begin an Oscar campaign for the film, according to Variety. They report that the studio behind the film is looking to get the movie considered for Best Picture and Best Director. Patty Jenkins, the director of 2003's Monster, directed Wonder Woman

Warner Bros. will also reportedly be placing their bets on Christopher Nolan’s recently released and critically acclaimed WW2 film Dunkirk.

Oscar campaigns are expensive, with some studios spending millions of dollars to get their films nominated. If Wonder Woman does make the cut, it would become the first comic book adapted film to achieve the distinction.

The studio's last attempt of getting a comic book film nominated was for 2008's ChristopherNolan-directed The Dark Knight. Wonder Woman has grossed an impressive $781 million globally since being released on June 2, 2017 and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 92 percent. The screenplay was written by Allan Heinberg. The film stars Gal Gadot as the titular character, with other roles played by Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, and ElenaAnaya. 

The 90th Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 4, 2018 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
