The Story Behind Mocking SpongeBob, the Meme Sweeping the Planet

And now it's time for a discussion about how Patrick Star is the real star of 'SpongeBob.'

Though it's certainly no Arthur's fist or perplexed Mr. Krabs, the latest meme taken from a classic cartoon is arguably just as ubiquitous. Unless you've (understandably) decided to reside under an internet-proof rock à la distinguished aquatic philosopher Patrick Star, you've certainly seen it:

Yes, that's Mr. SpongeBob SquarePants himself. Known in this incarnation as "Mocking SpongeBob," the setup is simple: reiterate what someone says, BuT TYpe iT LiKE tHiS iNSTeAd just to fuck with them.

For reference, here are some noteworthy examples of how to let Mr. SquarePants mock people on your behalf:

You: But where did this image of SpongeBob even come from?

Me: bUt WHeRe DId tHiS iMAgE oF SPoNgEbOb eVEn cOmE fRoM?

But honestly, I'm glad you asked. As already noted on its KnowYourMeme page, Mocking SpongeBob comes from a season 9 episode of SpongeBob SquarePants entitled "Little Yellow Book." In the episode, which first aired in 2013, Squidward Tentacles reads SpongeBob's diary and finds out that SpongeBob behaves like a chicken whenever he's faced with plaid. KnowYourMeme adds that the meme appears to have first popped up in a tweet from @OGBEARD before @lexysaeyang added the dialogue format.

Hopefully, the next SpongeBob SquarePants-inspired meme focuses on the real star of the show:
