First thing’s first. If you haven’t seen Jordan Peele’s brilliant horror movie Get Out, stop reading now. (Also, what’s wrong with you?) This piece is spoiler heavy, and the last thing we want to do is ruin the ending of one of the most universally acclaimed, crowd-pleasing movies in recent years.
One of the reasons that audiences have been gushing over the film—which chronicles what happens when a black man visits his white girlfriend's parents who turn out to be body-snatching racists—is its ultra satisfying ending. But according to Peele himself, he almost went an entirely different route.
While speaking BuzzFeed’s Another Round podcast, Peele revealed that the scene in which a cop arrives at after Daniel Kaluuya’s Chris murders his girlfriend's family, almost took the dark turn that many expected before the reveal that it was actually his best friend Rod (LilRel Howery) in the car.
“He gets locked up and taken away for slaughtering an entire family of white people, and you know he’s never getting out, if he doesn’t get shot there on the spot,” Peele said about the incredibly grim alternate ending.
As for why he went for the happy ending, Peele explained that he wanted to gives a “hero,” and make us feel good at the end of what can be a truly harrowing experience. “There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the audience go crazy when Rod shows up.”
