Donald Trump's attempt at demonizing the free press took its most troubling turn yet last week, a turn so upsetting that even former POTUS George W. Bush had to step out and speak against it. On Monday's Late Show, Stephen Colbert tried to make sense of the senselessness before Jon Stewart—straight from the farm—emerged from beneath his desk to speak truth to purported power.
"It really hit a new low on Friday when, at an informal press briefing, Sean Spicer banned reporters from CNN, the New York Times, Politico, the Los Angeles Times, and BuzzFeed," Colbert told his audience. "It's upsetting, but you gotta understand, BuzzFeed was excluded because Spicer didn't like the answer he got for Which Gilmore Girl Are You?" That Gilmore Girls joke, it seems, was enough to summon Stewart from beneath the desk:
Stewart reminded us that the media's breakup with Trump, who "lies more in one press conference than CNN does in a year," isn't going to be easy. "You finally thought you'd met your match, a blabbermouth who's as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are," Stewart said. "Well, now it’s over! Good riddance, I say. Kick him to the curb. It is time for you to get your groove back, media."
The hardest part, Stewart said, will be seeing the former Apprentice host attempting to swoon new outlets. "You're going to see your ex swiping far right with every Tom, Drudge, and Breitbart," Stewart joked. "And from what I've heard, they do anal." But instead of moping about the outcome, Stewart has a different recommendation: Take up a hobby. "I recommend journalism," he said.
