Angelina Jolie has remained relatively mum on her high-profile divorce from Brad Pitt, until now. In an interview with BBC World News’ Yalda Hakim, the actress and director finally addressed the stunning split, calling it a “very difficult time” in her life.

Jolie was on hand to discuss her new film First They Killed My Father, a Netflix original that chronicles the Cambodian genocide as seen through the eyes of a child.

Jolie added that her ultimate hope is that the divorce and its aftermath will make her family stronger as a result.

“Many, many people find themselves in this situation,” she explained. “My whole, my family… we’ve all being through a difficult time. My focus is my children, our children… and my focus is finding this way through. We are and forever will be a family. I am coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer. It’s been a difficult few months.”

Jolie and Pitt's split last September became tumultuous after news emerged of an incident on a plane involving Pitt and their son Maddox. Pitt was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, and in January the former power couple agreed to settle their divorce in private.

“Right now, I’m going through a moment when just everybody’s in my room,” Jolie added about life at home. “Two dogs, two hamsters, and two children at the moment. It’s wonderful. But, usually, I just wake up trying to figure out who’s going to get [the] dog out, who’s going to start the pancakes and did anybody brush their teeth.”
