Charlamagne Tha God

When you mention the name Charlamagne Tha God, most heads in the hip-hop community will think of the controversial voice of Power 105.1's morning show The Breakfast Club. He's the one that Birdman tried to press last April, and a tense interview with Beanie Sigel the following October. He may have gotten flack for meeting up with Tomi Lahren in New York, but if there's one thing Charlamagne does, it's speak his truth, whether you agree with him or not.

One thing people don't know about Charlamagne, who also hosts MTV2's Uncommon Sense (which is set to return in February), is putting out a book, and has gotten sweaty with our own Emily Oberg, is that he's a huge comic book fan.  "Anybody who knows me, knows I'm a Marvel fanatic," Charlamagne says. "I have Wolverine tatted on my right arm." He's dissected superhero films on his podcast The Brilliant Idiots and on social media in the past, but today he's dropping his first Marvel Comic, Charlamagne Tha God's Marvel New Year's Eve, which he wrote and stars in.

The project, which was written by Charlamagne with art from Nelson Blake II, MAST, and Andres Massa, was done in the similar vein as Method Man's Ghost Rider Christmas comic from December, but Charlamagne actually got a chance to be in the issue. The story is a simple one: Charlamagne plans a VIP New Year's Eve bash and invites loads of Marvel superheroes. The maniacal Norman Osbourne, who Spider-Man fans know as the Green Goblin, isn't on the list, and he isn't happy about it. The issue is as funny as Charlamagne can be in the Marvel world, and feels like the illest treat for a celebrity who happens to also be this huge Marvel head. Marvel Comics Editor in chief recently broke down how this union first came about.

"When Charlamagne stopped by our offices a few months ago, it became immediately clear he’s a Marvel Zombie through and through. So we got to talking," Alonso continues, "and it turns out he’s got story to tell in 2017. A story that drops him right into the center of the Marvel Universe, where he will go toe to toe against one of our biggest villains, with a timely assist from some of his handpicked favorite heroes."

Artist Nelson Blake II also makes his Marvel debut with this issue, and says he "couldn't have asked for a better, more fun start to my Marvel career than working with one of my favorite radio hosts, who happens to love these characters as much as I do."

Ultimately, the biggest winner out of all of this is Charlamagne, who added that "it's a privilege and honor to write and star in my own comic, I can officially cross that off the bucket list!"

The best part? Not only does Charlamagne get some jokes off (peep his rapport with fellow-baldie Luke Cage down below), but he brought some of his own friends along; mixing it up with Marvel heroes like Captain America and Iron Man are the likes of comedian Andrew Schulz (who hosts Brilliant Idiots with Charlamagne and can also be seen in Uncommon Sense), Taxstone (who has his own dope podcast as well), as does Marvel Executive Editor and Senior Vice President of Publishing Tom Breevort and the mighty Axel Alonso.

Charlamagne Tha God's Marvel New Year's Eve is another dope example of the worlds of hip-hop and comic books colliding, and is available digitally today. Check out some finished art, as well as some inked pages, down below.
