One thing we should all be thankful for this holiday season is Kristen Wiig. The Saturday Night Live veteran made a triumphant return to the very stage on which we watched her blossom into a star, this time as a host. It was Wiig’s second time hosting, and we knew she was game from the very get go when she delivered an opening monologue that might go down as one of the season's best.
After admitting that Thanksgiving is one of her favorite holidays—and birthing the term “Turkey Head” along the way—Wiig broke out into an earworm of a song about the holiday’s murky origins. According to her, it all had something to do with aliens, Vikings, and Kate McKinnon as Napoleon, which come to think of it, sounds a lot better than what really happened.
As an added bonus, Wiig’s version also included Steve Martin and Will Forte, both of whom started off as skeptics, but wound up as believers, because when Kristen Wiig asks you to drink the Kool-Aid, well, you better damn drink it.
The entire endeavor was a much needed respite from all the political news that’s being jammed down our throats lately. In fact, we can’t even remember the last time Saturday Night Live's opening monologue didn’t mention the election whatsoever. Sure, Martin made a crack about fake news, which brought us crashing back down to earth for a brief moment. But anytime you can get Kristen Wiig on stage with a dude dressed as a giant alien, well, that’s a win in our books.
In the spirit of the coming holiday, Wiig and company also treated us to a spoof on Manhattan's Thanksgiving Parade, which put a grim spin on killer clowns and parade floats.
