Wow. Hope you like TV shows that are inarguably great, because HBO has promised to bring two of the year's absolute best back for at least one more year. The Michael Crichton adaptation Westworld and Issa Rae's Insecure have both been renewed for their sophomore seasons, the network announced Monday.
"I am thrilled to announce the pickup of our three fall series, all of which have distinctive, original voices," HBO Programming boss Casey Bloys said in a press release, noting that Sarah Jessica Parker's hella depressing Divorce had also been picked up for another season. "Critics and viewers alike have welcomed Westworld and Insecure, as well as the return of Sarah Jessica Parker to the network after 12 years with Divorce."
Since debuting last month, Westworld has remained a much-discussed fall arrival and critical favorite. Speaking withEntertainment Weekly shortly after the season 2 renewal announcement, Bloys said fans may have to wait a bit longer for new episodes. "My suspicion is sometime in 2018 because of how big the world is and what goes into shooting it," Bloys said. "So I don’t have a date exactly—they're going to have to map it out and write the scripts—but my guess is sometime in '18."
Rae's Insecure, co-created by former Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore, has been hitting Girls-sized viewership numbers since premiering in October. According to the network, Insecure has averaged 3.2 million viewers. Speaking with the Breakfast Club crew shortly after the show's debut, Rae detailed the "long-ass journey" from YouTube to HBO. "We very much had to build from the ground up," Rae aid. "I credit, for sure, the viewers of [Awkward Black Girl] as the reason I have a show on HBO now."
