Marvel's Doctor Strange starring Benedict Cumberbatch found success at the box office this weekend, opening to $86 million overseas. For those of us in America, though, the movie will debut Friday. 

Last weekend, according to the Hollywood ReporterDoctor Strange opened in 33 territories, which make up around 45 percent of the total marketplace, including France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Mexico.

According to Variety, the $86 million opening is almost 50 percent better than Ant-Man, 37 percent better than Guardians of the Galaxy, and 23 percent ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The haul of $86 million included $7.8 million from IMAX screenings, from 213 screens in 32 countries. According to DeadlineDoctor Strange's debut is IMAX's best October international debut ever, more than doubling Gravity's previous record of $3.2 million. In South Korea, it was the biggest IMAX opening ever, according to the Hollywood Reporter. And there's more to come—another 787 IMAX theaters around the world will show the film starting Nov. 4, when the film debuts in America, China, Russia, Japan, Brazil, and more. All in all, with more than 1,000 IMAX screens showing the film, it'll be the widest global release in IMAX history.

In addition to Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, the film, directed by Scott Derrickson, will co-star Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Rachel McAdams. In the film, the title character, a surgeon named Doctor Stephen Strange, is left with his career in ruins after his hands were destroyed in a car accident. After that, he looks for the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton, to teach him mystical arts.
