Leonardo DiCaprio Is Making a 'Captain Planet' Movie

Leonardo DiCaprio loves the environment, so it makes sense that he'd love the ultimate environmental superhero.

Leonardo DiCaprio is making another movie about the environment, but this one is probably going to be way more action-packed than his climate change documentary Before the Flood that comes out this month. The Hollywood Reporter says that DiCaprio's production company Appian Way is producing a Captain Planet movie.

As you may remember from his earworm theme song, Captain Planet is "our hero. Gonna take pollution down to zero." The environmentalism-themed cartoon series from the '90s followed the blue-skinned superhero, who'd be summoned when The Planeteers, a group of multicultural teens who repped earth, fire, wind, water, and heart, shouted, "Let our powers combine!" Then the captain would show up and they'd all yell, "Go, Planet!"

It's pretty hard to remember anything after that, but suffice to say there was definitely an anti-littering message in there somewhere.

The script will reportedly be co-written by Glen Powell from Scream Queens. THR writes that there's no word yet on whether or not Powell will also star in the movie, thereby kicking off speculation that Powell will star in the movie. Look at this photo of him and you'll definitely see the possibilities.

This isn't the first time there's been talk of a new Captain Planet project—Cartoon Network was supposedly working on a movie back in 2011, and Adi Shankar seemed to have a pretty cool idea for a darker Captain Planet last year—but considering the dire environmental situation on planet Earth right now, the character seems more relevant than ever.
