Everyone in their right mind is a little afraid of snakes. Ok, there might be some author bias here, but most people aren’t a huge fan of the things. In a recent Gallup poll, more people admitted to fearing snakes than any other possibility listed - including heights, spiders, and public speaking.

So, here is where we make an important disclaimer. If you fall into the (very reasonable) group of people that fear snakes, then this story really isn’t for you.

Authorities in the Toronto region, are on the lookout for a “large and venomous” snake. The creature escaped a conservatory in Ajax, Ontario, and was snapped by a rather stunned onlooker. The photographic evidence was then sent to experts at the Toronto Zoo, who have since confirmed the snake as an agkistrodon contortrix, commonly known as a copperhead.

Thankfully, the venom of this particular snake isn’t life-threatening to adults. It could, however, easily harm children and small pets. Authorities want everyone to be aware of trails in the dirt, and to be cautious if you’re walking your dog in the area. The town has also recruited the Indian River Reptile Zoo, to help locate the snake.

According to Florida’s Department of Wildlife, the chances of dying from a venomous snake is nearly 0%. This is due to the advances in medicine, and the close proximity to health facilities. The organization clarifies that nearly one in 50,000,000 people die from being bitten by a snake. Still, you don’t want to be that one person.

Be safe on the trails, and don’t be embarrassed to admit your fear of snakes. If you’re in Ajax, you may just encounter one this weekend.
