Unless you’ve been living under a rock you've mostly likely heard about, or watched, Stranger Things, the latest Netflix show that everyone and their cat has been binge watching over the summer. Created by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, it's the perfect blend of 80's American pop culture, sci-fi and horror. Prior to their hit Netflix series the Duffer Brothers were fairly unknown but they did produce this short film, titled Eater, back in 2007, which you can watch above.
Even though it merges 80's slasher-horror with 70's prison exploitation films, Eater shows glimpses of what was to come for their hit Netflix show. The short film centres on a police officer who's on the graveyard shift, whilst a serial-killing-cannibal is locked away in his cell. But this being the world of fiction it turns out that he’s not there, instead the killer cannibal is on the loose in the station.
While the plot is quite basic and you can kind of guess the direction the Duffer brothers are going in, it’s still a fun watch filled with tension, shape-shifting and an excellent choice of music. As stated before it serves as premise for what they had in store for Stranger Things.
