Warner Bros. is ready to harness the power of the extended DC Universe once again, announcing Wednesday that the long-in-development Justice League Dark movie would be moving forward with a new director. Doug Liman has been tapped to helm Justice League Dark with a script by Michael Gilio, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Liman's résumé is packed with an impressive run of brainy action smashes and, impressively enough, two episodes of the undisputed classic The O.C. Liman landed killer reviews and equally killer box office receipts 11 years ago with the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Dude has also been at the steering wheel for Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers, and the OG Bourne Identity.

Notably, Liman hopping aboard Justice League Dark inadvertently serves as confirmation that the X-Men spin-off Gambit, maybe starring Channing Tatum, is probably never going to happen. Bummer. But a big screen adaptation of DC's recently launched Dark narrative couldn't have found a more fitting director, even when reminded that the project was initially slated to be a Guillermo del Toro vehicle.

Though plot and cast details have not been announced, the film has plenty to pick from given Justice League Dark's dense array of mostly supernatural DC universe recruits. The film could choose to include Dark members John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Zatanna, Changing Man, Shade, or Deadman. As fellow Keanu Reeves scholars will note, John Constantine previously made cinematic waves in the 2005 Francis Lawrence movie Constantine.

Meanwhile, Zack Snyder is currently hard at work on next year's Justice League. Thus, we again must ask: does Marvel still stand a chance at getting totally washed by DC?
