HBO knows a thing or two about snatching up great shows and is clearly in the business of continuing that trend with High Maintenance. The series, created by real-life married couple Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, centers on a weed delivery dude (Sinclair) as he and the viewers come face-to-face with clients across New York City.
The series started as brief bursts of fairly experimental filmmaking, quickly garnering attention with its ability to offer compelling glimpses into the lives of The Guy's clients. After existing as a Vimeo original series and amassing a dedicated following, HBO fittingly scooped up High Maintenance on April 20 (*hits blunt*) of last year for six new episodes.
"We have been growing this show organically for three years now, and we are elated to bring it into full maturity at HBO, the gold standard of both online and televised entertainment," Blichfeld and Sinclair said in a joint statement Thursday. As part of that "full maturity" process, High Maintenance will now be delivered in half-hour increments each Friday on HBO. All 19 prior episodes, previously available through Vimeo, will also be added to HBO GO and HBO NOW apps so you can get caught up on the mastery.
Speaking with Complex back in 2014, when the web series version of High Maintenance was just starting to hit the mainstream conversation, Blichfeld elaborated on how the idea for the series first came into fruition. "I think one day we were riding bikes, and we actually don't know who came up with the idea for it to be a weed deal, but all we knew was that it needed to be short, under five minutes," Blichfeld told Complex. "We thought it would be cool to film an interaction that could happen in real-time, and ideally something that could be shot in one location with few people. Once we zoomed in on those parameters, it became clear that a weed delivery fulfilled all of those things."
High Maintenance premieres on HBO Sept. 16 with "Meth(od)," an episode centered on a particularly awkward delivery in which The Guy encounters some serious hypermasculinity. Don't miss that shit.
