Legendary and The Pokemon Co. aren't screwing around when it comes to their previously announced live-action Pokémon movie. And given the phenomenal success of the augmented reality instaclassic Pokémon Go, who can blame them for putting this project on the fast track? As Entertainment Weekly quietly confirmed Monday night, the project has now secured two writers with a proven skill for franchise excellence.

Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch are currently deep in negotiations to pen the live-action Pokémon film, which will be loosely based on the Japanese video game Great Detective Pikachu. Perlman is perhaps best known for her work on James Gunn's 2014 smash Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as her forthcoming writing on Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Hirsch is the creator of the Disney XD series Gravity Falls.

Though no casting details have been unveiled, Varietyreported last month that Legendary is pushing hard to get the film into production by next year. The deal surrounding the film was made official just weeks after Pokémon Go's launch, which has renewed interest in the popular franchise across the industry.

In addition to a detective version of Pikachu, the movie's source material also features a young boy character named Tim Goodman. The two quickly embark on a citywide pursuit of crime-solving fun, which is actually a great set-up for a presumed live-action blockbuster. Previous incarnations of Pokémon on the big screen have taken a purely animated route, including last year's Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages.
