The first season of HBO’s True Detective was met with impressive ratings and even more impressive reviews; however, the series’ second season wasn’t able to attain the same success—in fact, many considered it a big ol’ fail. Critics, fans, and even the show’s former cast members questioned whether True Detective deserved another chance—leading many people to believe that the show was pretty much done for. But, that might not be the case.

During the Television Critics Association’s press tour Saturday, HBO’s new programming chief Casey Bloys told reporters True Detective isn’t dead; however, the network is considering replacing Nic Pizzolatto as the lead writer and moving him to a supervisory role.

“I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season,” Bloys said according to Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”

This is just another piece of encouraging news for True Detective fans. Last week, Matthew McConaughey said he misses playing Rust Cohle, and that he’d even consider reprising his role.

“I would return. It’d have to be in the right context and the right way,” McConaughey said during an interview on The Rich Eisen Show. “It’d need that spark like when I first read the scripts. When I read it, I knew after 20 minutes that I could play this guy and that I’m in.”

Here’s hoping it makes a return.
