The Victoria and Albert Museum’s 2013 exhibition ‘David Bowie Is’ was a critically acclaimed celebration of the Thin White Duke’s life and career, bringing together handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs, Bowie’s own instruments and album artwork from the David Bowie Archive. It was the fastest selling exhibition in the museum’s history, but because not everyone lives in London, the closing night of the show was beamed live to cinemas across the UK, with curators Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh offering a guided tour around the exhibits, alongside guests including legendary Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto and Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker. And while it might seem a bit odd to go and see a museum in the cinema, it was a massive hit amongst cinemas that show ‘alternative content’ (ie stuff that isn’t movies).

Following Bowie’s death in January, interest in his music and life has only increased. So the film version of ‘David Bowie Is’ is coming back to cinemas. It’ll be shown at Vue Cinemas and selected other venues from July 14, giving those who missed it the first time a chance to see it.

Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh said:

We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of David Bowie. His far-reaching influence on cultural life is unparalleled and the film offers illuminating detail about key objects from the David Bowie Archive with commentary from special guest contributors and a fantastic soundtrack.
