Pacific Rim definitely had its fans, but the film disappointed at the box office. Director Guillermo del Toro always intended for it to be an ongoing saga, but it has taken a while to get part two off the ground. Now however, the sequel has been confirmed.
The biggest problem facing Pacific Rim 2 is that the coolest character — Idris Elba's major — was (spoiler) killed off in the first one. But now it turns out none other than John Boyega will be playing his son in the sequel. That's pretty cool, even though we'd like to see Elba and Boyega on-screen together (flashbacks, maybe?).
Boyega will also be producing the film, with Steven S DeKnight (showrunner on Daredevil and Spartacus) directing.
