The X-Files just might be eternal. Despite finishing up a six-episode limited revival series back in February, Chris Carter's sci-fi classic is already pouring all kinds of fuel on the speculation fire surrounding even more episodes. Though the series was noticeably absent from FOX's list of pick-ups and renewals for their 2016-17 slate, that's not exactly the abysmal news it may seem.
FOX bosses Dana Walden and Gary Newman confirmed to Entertainment Weekly Monday that "all parties involved" were down for another batch of X, with the oft-conflicting schedules of leads Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny preventing the immediate return favored by hungry fans. The network is reportedly pushing to announce another X-Files at next year's upfront presentation.
FOX did not immediately respond to Complex's request for comment, which is totally fine and cool or whatever because we have this to chew on:
No word on whether or not Duchovny's debut album is littered with hidden X-Files clues, but the events of the season 10 closer (the excellent "My Struggle II") offer plenty of directions for seasons and movies (and more Duchovny albums?) ahead.
Recent real-life events could also have an impact on the future of the series. Take, for example, the reinvigorated hype surrounding Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton's whisperings of future transparency regarding previously secret UFO documents.
"The American people can handle the truth," Clinton campaign chair John Podesta toldCNN in April. "The U.S. government could do a much better job in answering the quite legitimate questions that people have about what's going on with unidentified aerial phenomena." With any luck, Clinton will pop in on the next batch of X-Files for a cameo not entirely unlike the one she gifted to Broad City earlier this year.
