When Robert Downey Jr. stopped by Jimmy Kimmel's show last week to talk about how Tom Holland was taking this whole "new Spider-Man" thing, he made a point to note that a certain contract still required inking. However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, that contract has now secured the signature of one Downey Jr., thus confirming his appearance in next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Holland's Spider-Man, of course, is set to make a proper debut in next month's Captain America: Civil War. That appearance is believed to set up a "key relationship" between Tony Stark and Peter Parker, a relationship THR confirms will be further explored in Homecoming. Securing Downey's participation in Homecoming reportedly required an additional "round of negotiations," though THR says it remains "unclear" whether those negotiations resulted in solely the Homecoming appearance or future films. Seemingly stressful negotiations aside, RDJ remains properly stoked about what Holland will do for the character. "To me, Spider-Man was my whole deal," he told Kimmel last Wednesday. "He was funny, he was cool, he was young like us." Adding that Holland had done a "fantastic" job, the part-time Iron Man then jokingly took credit for the development of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So what exactly is Tom Holland bringing to the table, a table once occupied by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield? All will be revealed when Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into existence on July 7, 2017. Until then, watch out for him in Captain America: Civil War on May 6.
