Watership Down is one of those films that probably terrified you as a kid. On the surface, it’s a cartoon about talking rabbits, so it gets shown to children, but actually when you watch it it’s a brutal AF tale of warfare, gore and frequent death. Channel 5 showed it on Easter Sunday and ended up getting loads of complaints about it from parents of horrified kids.

So yeah, the original novel by Richard Adams has some really interesting mature themes. And now Netflix are going explore them, creating a new animated version co-produced by the BBC. They’ve lined up a pretty impressive cast of voice talents for it as well. John Boyega headlines as Bigwig, the head badass rabbit, who teams with protagonists Hazel and Fiver as they faces multiple dangers in search of a new home. Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy and Gemma Arterton also all signed up.

And just to prove how violent it’ll be they’ve got they guy who made 300: Rise of an Empire, Noam Munro,to direct it. BBC drama boss Ben Stephenson promises that state of the art animation will show “the wind blowing through the fur of the rabbits”, so expect blood and fur flying everywhere when it comes out next year.
