There was a lot of talk about the Tom Cruise sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow being a box office disappointment, or even a flop, when it came out in 2014. The reviews were always great (90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but it only opened to $25 million domestically, and only made about $100 million total in North America. That's with a reported budget of something like $178 million, not counting the costs of marketing it.

The thing is, there was a whole rest of the world that gladly opened their wallets and bought tickets for Edge of Tomorrow. The final worldwide box office total, according to Box Office Mojo, was more than $370 million, which means it made plenty of money. So, don't be so surprised that it's officially getting a sequel.

Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, who wrote the Jessie Owens biopic, Race, are signed on to write the screenplay for the sequel, Deadline reports. Doug Liman, who directed the original, will return as director and Christopher McQuarrie, who directed Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, is working on the film as a producer and advisor. No word yet on Cruise and Emily Blunt coming back, but you'd have to assume that's the plan.

The movie can't happen too soon. Liman is directing the Gambit movie, which is reportedly set to film later this year.
