Robert DeNiro Was Once in Line to Play Wolverine in a 90s 'X-Men' Movie

In 2016 it seems like every other movie is based on a comic book — but if you were a fanboy back in the 90s, all you had were a handful of Batman movies, Shaq playing third-stringers, and rumours about films that never got made, like James Cameron directing Spider-Man or Nicolas Cage playing Superman.

One of those rumours has been unearthed by Mental Floss, and damn, it sounds like it would have been sick. They’ve found a cutting from The Sun that reports that a $100 million X-Men was coming, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Colossus and Robert DeNiro playing Wolverine. Which would have been so, so dope (especially in 1995 — if it happened today when they are both well old, less so).

X-Men would of course finally be made in 2000, with Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine. Colossus would turn up in X-Men 2 played by Daniel Cudmore, and he had a bigger role as an all-CGI character in this year’s Deadpool voiced by Stefan Kapicic.

Head over to Mental Floss to see the original report (LOL at them have to explain to non-nerds who Wolverine was back in the 90s).
