Back before Grand Theft Auto let you mow down cops and prostitutes, Carmageddon was the original tabloid-scaring driving game. It was basically a straight-up racing game, but you got bonuses for running over innocent pedestrians, who would explode in grainy pixelated puddles of blood. In truth, it wasn’t very good, and looks very tame today, but back in the day it was banned by the BBFC, and eventually released with the human victims replaced by ‘zombies’ that had green blood.
Now nearly 20 years after the original controversy, and because no game franchise ever truly dies, the game is getting a reboot for PS4 and Xbox One. Carmageddon: Max Damage is set for release sometime later this year, and promises online modes, 30 different vehicles, 10 open environments and 90 power-ups. But we don’t car about any of that — can you still run people over? Thankfully, the trailer shows not just pedestrians, but cyclists, wheelchair users and even a fat dude on a mobility scooter being squished, all in modern day graphical glory. What a time to be alive.
