When it comes to indisputable classics, few movies stand quite as tall as Ridley Scott's 1982 stroke of genius, Blade Runner. Though the film initially baffled critics back in the 1980s (an era estimated to have occurred approximately 400 trillion years ago), the best movie about a dystopian Los Angeles ever made eventually achieved nearly unanimous acclaim. Three decades later, after much speculation and a few false starts, Blade Runner 2 is officially happening.

Harrison Ford will return as Rick Deckard alongside Blade Runner newcomer Ryan Gosling, Indiewire reports. Warner Bros. and Sony have stepped up to tackle distribution duties, with the previously rumored Denis Villeneuve occupying the director's chair. "We know of few projects with greater international potential than the long dreamed of sequel to Blade Runner," Sony boss Tom Rothman said in a press release, adding that Blade Runner 2 "fulfills a long-time personal ambition."

Though the press release maintained a generally vague approach to plot details, the sequel will apparently follow Deckard's character "several decades" after the vents of the original film. Shooting is slated to begin in July of this year, meaning a late-2017 release certainly isn't out of the question.
