The 'Avatar' Sequel Won't Be Hitting Theaters Next Year After All

James Cameron's 'Avatar' sequel delayed indefinitely.

If fans of Avatar could wait what was thought to be only expected to be eight years, they can wait nine right? Star Wars fans did make it through 10 years before The Force Awakens (and that's not even the longest they had to wait between sequels.) Most would argue it was worth the wait. The long-coming sequel to the highest grossing film ever, at $2.9 billion, supposed to premiere in 2017, has been delayed. Indefinitely.

The Wrapreports the exclusive news citing sources who know about of the delay. Avatar's studio, 20th Century Fox, has not set a new release date. The film is the first of a trilogy which Cameron announced in early 2015 was being pushed back to a 2017 release date. The three films, starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, are set to shoot at the same time. Cameron recently toldEntertainment Weekly, "I'm in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining. That's in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We've been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set]."

The other two films were set to premiere in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Release dates for the other sequels have also not been announced.
