The amazing second season of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta's HBO series The Leftovers ended this past Sunday on an intriguing note; not only did the finale tie up a number of wild loose ends, but it scored the season's highest ratings at just under a million viewers. While fans of the program might have been miffed at supposed Golden Globes snubs, they ultimately had the last laugh, as HBO has announced that they've renewed The Leftovers for a third and final season.

Maybe all of those IRL Guilty Remnant followers did the trick.

In an official statement HBO says they "are thrilled to welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind The Leftovers for a third season. The critical and fan-based response to Season 2 has been exceptional and has catapulted the show to a level of awareness and appreciation that makes it even more exciting to see where these original storytellers will take us.” It looks like Lindelof's talk about "making your voice heard" really worked.

Lindelof echoed the same "telling complete stories" talk that he did when Lost's final season was announced: “Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring THE LEFTOVERS to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be."

For many, the season two finale (MILD SPOILER ALERT) felt like a it had a sense of closure, so it'll see how Lindelof, Perrotta, and their crew chose to complete the tale. Hopefully everyone isn't in purgatory...
