After a failed 2004 sequel / reboot / general abomination and a troubled path toward a TV remake, the Dirty Dancing universe is finally receiving some good news. ABC just gave the go-ahead for a fresh three-hour musical version of the 1987 instaclassic starring Patrick Swayzeand Jennifer Grey. Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin is set to play the new Baby, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Breslin’s take on Baby is described as "an innocent young woman in the early 1960s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor," which, yeah, that sounds like Dirty DancingEleanor Bergstein, who penned the script for the original Swayze hit, will executive produce alongside The Hunger Games’ Allison Shearmur with The L Word’s Jessica Sharzer aboard as writer and Wayne Blair as director.

Of course, ABC's move isn't necessarily surprising, especially when coupled with the fact that NBC's recent The Wiz Live! TV event was a profound homerun for the network. In fact, a pretty bragworthy 11.5 million tuned in to catch the highly tweetable special. As long as this trend leads to a world lucky enough to have a Curb Your Enthusiasm musical then, by all means, continue to reboot untouchable classics as often as humanly possible.
