The Ava DuVernay Barbie doll will go on sale on Monday, courtesy of Mattel Toys. The Selma director is part of a "Sheroes" line created by the toymaker. The woman being honored in the toy series can auction off her doll and donate the profit to a charity of their choice. DuVernay is donating all of her proceeds to Color of Change and the Witness Organization.
On Sunday, DuVernay's fans asked Mattel to mass produce her doll, and luckily, the company agreed to make more DuVernay Barbies that would be available to the public. DuVernay even tweeted that the Ava Barbie goes on sale on Monday, which is perfect timing for Christmas shopping. She tweeted, "Tomororw this #AvaBarbie goes on sale for Christmas because enough folks asked Mattel to do so. Wild + wonderful." Wonderful, indeed.
The Wrapnoted that it is unclear where fans can purchase the doll. Women being honored in the "Sheroes" series include Emmy Rossum, Kristin Chenoweth, country-artist Trisha Yearwood, Lucky magazine editor Eva Chen, and Sydney fashion designer "Mayhem" Keiser.
DuVernay was the first African-American woman to direct a movie that was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, so she's definitely a "Shero."
