Steven Spielberg and Barbra Streisand to Receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Meryl Streep and Stevie Wonder were among last year's recipients.

We haven’t even hit award season yet but it’s already raining honors for actors in Hollywood and abroad. After Benedict Cumberbatch received a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) from Queen Elizabeth last week, Steven Spielberg and Barbra Streisand will be honored by President Barack Obama on Nov. 24. The award-winning pair, along with 15 other distinguished guests, are set to receive the 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom, Varietyreports

Presented to individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” the award is the nation’s highest civilian honor. Others notable recipients include Yogi Berra, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Willie Mays, NASA mathematician Katherine G. Johnson, composer Stephen Sondheim and recording artist James Taylor.

In a press release from the White House, President Obama said, “I look forward to presenting these 17 distinguished Americans with our nation’s highest civilian honor. From public servants who helped us meet defining challenges of our time to artists who expanded our imaginations, from leaders who have made our union more perfect to athletes who have inspired millions of fans, these men and women have enriched our lives and helped define our shared experience as Americans.”
