Sadly, the fear-mongering tactics of Donald Trump, Mike Huckabee, and countless others have successfully birthed a growing anti-refugee sentiment in parts of the United States. Sensing the need to pander, many members of Congress and various governors have decided to take a baffling stand against the acceptance of Syrian refugees in the wake of the recent ISIS attacks in Paris. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, however, has decided to cut the nonsense by outlining why exactly this growing anti-refugee mindset is perhaps the most un-American move the country could make right now.
"I am more fearful of large gatherings of white men that come into schools [and] theaters and shoot people up," Rawlings said during a recent MSNBC appearance, "but we don’t isolate young white men on this issue." Rawlings also briefly addressed some of that aforementioned anti-refugee fear manufacturing by treading much of the same ground as John Oliver’s recent takedown of Huckabee and company. Specifically, he highlighted the lengthy (and quite thorough) screening process that generally includes a series of background checks and in-person interviews.
It's also worth noting that absolutely none of the "ISIS-linked" suspects ever charged in the United States have been from Syria, though an estimated 80.9 percent of ISIS-affiliated suspects charged in the United States are actually, you guessed it, Americans. Even with the facts standing firmly against them, there are still people out there right now comparing Syrian refugees to a variety of unsavory food items like spoiled Chipotle milk and poisonous peanuts.
