When the clock strikes midnight on the Pacific Coast tonight, Aziz Ansari's show Master of None will officially hit Netflix. The show was created by Ansari, stars Ansari, and is also produced and written by Ansari (along with Alan Yang). He's a one-man wrecking crew in Master of None, which would be impressive on its own—even before you consider that the show is unique, sometimes brilliant, and without a doubt one of the best to premiere in 2015. Tom Haverford has stepped out on his own, and is straight up killing it.

Which makes it pretty fun to look back—way back—to when we interviewed Ansari for our Feb./March 2009 issue. At the time, Ansari was coming off his weird/hilarious MTV show, Human Giant, and getting his first taste at real fame thanks to Parks & Recreation and RAAAAAAAANDY from Judd Apatow's Funny People. Talking to Damien Scott, Ansari kept things pretty humble (he was also clearly down to throw on some waders and hop in Echo Park Lake), but there were definitely signs that he had big things planned, and he might have hinted at some of the ideas that became central themes to Master of None.
