The Weather Channel Thinks "YOLO" Would Make an Excellent Winter Storm Name

The world never knew Weather Channel storm namers were so into airbrushed t-shirts referencing Panama City Beach.

Look what you've done, Drake. The Weather Channel (TWC) released its new list of tentative winter storm names for 2015 and 2016, a mostly underwhelming mess of a list that also happens to include the name Yolo. In addition to the word's unfortunate ability to immediately conjure disturbing images of neon-clad beachgoers chugging light beer, its new association with meteorology also has a far more practical explanation: dollars and cents.

While names for other types of storms are generally decided upon by a selection of warning centers and intended purely as a shorthand between forecasters, the highly coveted winter storm names  are (now) considered a potential chance to strike promotions gold. As noted by the Verge, the network hit a ratings homerun with the recent Halloween weather event "Snowtober" because poetry never really dies.

The full list of tentative names also includes potential snow celebrities like Troy, Olympia, Jonas, and what is obviously another in a series of attempts at shrewd advertising for Ridley Scott's The Martian, Mars.
